How to Convert FIT to GPX

Convert Garmin FIT files to the universal GPX format for use with mapping tools and other platforms

Why convert FIT to GPX?

GPX is the most widely supported GPS data format. If you have a FIT file from your Garmin device and want to share a route on a hiking forum, load it into a mapping app, or import it into a platform that only accepts GPX, this conversion is what you need.

GPX is also the standard format for route planning tools and outdoor navigation apps.

What data is preserved?

When converting FIT to GPX, FitConvert preserves:

  • GPS coordinates (latitude and longitude)
  • Elevation data
  • Timestamps

However, GPX does not natively support certain fitness metrics, so the following data will not be included in the output:

  • Heart rate
  • Cadence
  • Speed
  • Distance

If you need to keep heart rate and cadence data, consider converting to TCX instead.

How to convert with FitConvert

  1. Go to FitConvert
  2. Upload your .fit file by dragging it onto the page or clicking to browse
  3. Select GPX as the output format
  4. Click Convert
  5. The .gpx file downloads automatically

Everything happens in your browser. No data is uploaded to any server.

Alternative approaches

Garmin Connect allows you to export activities as GPX directly, but this only works for activities already synced to your account. FitConvert works with any .fit file on your computer, including files from other devices or third-party tools.
